Myofascial Release
Myofascial release is a blend of stretching and massage. It is a therapy that uses hands-on manipulation on the entire body to promote healing and relieve pain. As the name suggests, “myofascial” comes from the Latin word 'myo' which means muscle and 'fascia' which means connective tissues. Therapists are trained to do this therapy to ease pressure in the fibrous bands of connective tissue or fascia.
The major cause of pain that impeded the motion is an injury to this network of connective tissue. The easy stretches that are performed by a therapist aim to alleviate these problems by breaking up or releasing the constrictions or snags in the fascia. People who can benefit from this technique are those who have longstanding back pain, fibromyalgia, recurring headaches, sport injuries, and lots of additional physical complaints.
The idea of myofascial release therapy is based on the idea that poor posture, physical injury, illness and emotional stress can throw the body out of alignment. It causes an intricate web of fascia to become constricted. This fascia is the one who links every organ and tissue in the body with every other part. The skillful use of the hand is said to free up or release disruptions in the fascial network. The pressure on the bones, muscles, joints, and nerves is relieved in the process and balance is restored.
The continuous stretching of myofascial release is believed to free adhesions and soften and lengthen the fascia. Once the fascia is free from impeding blood vessels or nerves, it is said to enhance the body's innate restorative powers by improving circulation and nervous system transmission.
The release during this therapy indicates that the muscle is relaxing. The fascial adhesions are slowly breaking down or the fascia has been realigned to its proper orientation. This process is repeated until the tissues are fully elongated.
As soon as the session is over, some people immediately feel better – free of pain and are able to move their joints more freely. However, others may feel some increased discomfort during that night or the next day. Any soreness one may feel should subside within a day or two. Also, you should feel less pain and move more easily that you did before.
Myofascial release treats different types of painful ailments that affect the muscles and connective tissues. These ailments include fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, muscle spasms and some others. This therapy can be used for many other conditions as well as in people of all ages. Those who are suffering from jaw pain, discomfort from the scars of surgery, headaches and chronic fatigue syndrome can benefit on this therapy. In some women, this technique is sometimes used for relief of pelvic pain, menstrual problems, and even infertility. It can also be offered to children with birth trauma, head injuries, cerebral palsy and scoliosis.
Many people hold stress in their muscles that causes the muscle to lock and this myofascial release operates there. This therapy aims to access these areas of blockage and tension to release them. Thus, freeing up the muscle and allowing it to move more easily and effectively.
With a regular myofascial release, it can improve posture, ease areas of muscle soreness and improve flexibility. Just like any other therapies, it is better to consult a doctor first before starting a myofascial release program to avoid conflicts with medical condition or other treatments. This therapy should never be painful. If the pain is felt, the therapist should work differently on the affected area or move to another location.
