Swedish massage started during the 1700's but was not really originated from Sweden. In fact the term “Swedish massage” is also referred to as “classic massage”.

Swedish massage is generally credited to Dutch practitioner Johan Georg Mezger as the man who adopted the French names to denote the basic strokes used in massage as we know it today, as Swedish or classic massage.

The different techniques and strokes used in the massage are the following: effleurage, petrissage, friction, vibration, percussion, passive and active movements.
